Can I use the S&S Camshaft in a stock engine configuration? Yes but it is still necessary to install the supplied shims underneath the stock valve springs. In order to accomplish this you will need to remove the cylinder head as described within the installation instructions (be sure to order a replacement cylinder head gasket) or utilize special shop tools which allow you to remove the valve springs without removing the cylinder head.
The S&S website picture shows a sprocket installed on the Camshaft and mine did not include a sprocket. Apologies, the picture shows the OEM sprocket installed onto the S&S Camshaft. The OEM sprocket has fully slotted bolt holes which allows enough adjustment to achieve the correct cam timing with the S&S Camshaft.
